Looking After Your Wellbeing Doesn't Have to Cost Anything
10th Jun 2026
When people think about improving their wellbeing, they often picture gym memberships, expensive hobbies or wellness retreats.
The reality is that many of the people we work with are balancing work, family responsibilities, caring roles, health concerns and rising living costs. Finding extra time, let alone extra money, isn't always easy.
Through our community sessions, coffee mornings and NHS Talking Therapies outreach work, we regularly speak to people who tell us they know they should look after themselves more, but don't know where to start.
Supporting your wellbeing doesn't have to be complicated or expensive.
Start With a Conversation
One of the most common things we hear from people is that they have been carrying worries on their own for months, sometimes years.
Whether it's a friend, family member, neighbour, faith leader or support worker, talking to someone you trust can often be the first step towards feeling more supported.
Many of the people we meet at community events initially stop for information but end up sharing concerns they haven't spoken about before.
Make Time for Something You Enjoy
Wellbeing isn't always about solving problems. Sometimes it's about making space for things that bring us joy.
For some people that might be gardening. For others it could be sewing, cooking, walking, arts and crafts, spending time with grandchildren or attending a local community group.
Activities don't have to be formal to benefit our wellbeing. What matters is that they help us feel connected, relaxed or give us something positive to focus on.
Get Out of the House
Loneliness and isolation can have a significant impact on mental wellbeing.
We often meet people who tell us they spend most of their time at home, particularly older residents, carers and those experiencing health challenges.
Something as simple as attending a coffee morning, joining a walking group or visiting a community event can help people reconnect with others and build confidence.
Don't Wait Until Things Feel Unmanageable
Many people seek support only when they reach a crisis point.
Looking after your wellbeing is just as important as looking after your physical health. If you're feeling overwhelmed, struggling with anxiety, low mood or stress, support is available.
Seeking support early can often prevent problems from becoming more difficult later on.
Support Is Available
At Equality Action, we help people access a range of support services, including NHS Talking Therapies.
We know that for some people, particularly those from diverse communities, talking about mental health can feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable. That's why we work within the community, creating opportunities for people to ask questions, have conversations and learn about the support available in a way that feels accessible and welcoming.
