Annual Public Lecture 2020 - No Outsiders: Developing an inclusive education ethos

16th Jan 2020

We are delighted to host our 10th annual lecture in partnership with Loughborough University, one of our long standing partners. This year’s guest speaker is Andrew Moffat, MBE, renowned for the development of ‘No Outsiders’, a whole school ethos celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion. The event will be in the Brockington Building Room U020.

This echoes our mission statement ‘promoting equality and diversity, dignity and respect through inclusion’, which we have been championing in Charnwood for over 50 years.

Andrew was awarded an MBE for services to Equality and Diversity in Education and we know his expertise and insight will be hugely valuable to everyone who attends.

‘No Outsiders’ is a whole school ethos preparing children for life in modern Britain. The ethos teaches children from age four upwards that we are all different in our school but everyone is welcome, no one is left out, no one is an outsider. Using the Equality Act 2010 as a foundation, the resource uses picture books as stimulus to explore diversity and difference and relate to the world outside the school gate.

In 2019, protests emerged at Andrew’s school against the inclusion of LGBT equality in the ‘No Outsiders’ curriculum. These protests quickly spread to other schools and ‘No Outsiders’ became a focus for the debate around Relationship and Sex Education in British schools. At the same time Andrew was listed as a top 10 finalist in the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize; later in the year as a direct result of the protests, Andrew was the recipient of awards from Pink News, Attitude Magazine, the European Diversity Awards and presented with an honorary doctorate from the University of Worcester.

Andrew’s school continues to teach ‘No Outsiders’ and in January 2020 he started a new role as Personal Development Lead for Excelsior Trust. We are delighted to be hosting this lecture in partnership with Loughborough University and thank them for their hospitality.
